AIRASIA FLIGHT QZ8501: CREW, PASSENGERS AND FAMILIES

Where is AIRASIA INDONESIA FLIGHT QZ8501 from Surabaya to Singapore?

offering compensation of S$32,000 for each passenger on : Reports

SINGAPORE: AirAsia had offered 300 million rupiah (S$32,000) for each passenger on board the ill-fated AirAsia flight QZ8501 as initial compensation, according to reports by Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and Riau Pos.

WSJ, citing David Thejakusuma who had seven family members on the flight, reported on Monday (Jan 5) that the budget carrier had offered the amount for each of the family members, including his sister and mother.

The letter of compensation, which WSJ claimed to have seen, was dated Jan 2 and said the “initial compensation is part of the overall” compensation that would be given to the family. The letter was on AirAsia stationery, with AirAsia Indonesia Chief Executive Sunu Widyatmoko’s name, but not his signature, the report noted.

Families will be compensated, lawyers say despite cloud over QZ8501 flight

PETALING JAYA, Jan 5 — Families or next of kin of victims on board Flight QZ8501 will still be compensated regardless of whether investigations reveal the flight was not permitted.

Questions of invalidated insurance policies loomed after Indonesian authorities claimed the flight had operated without approval.

Lawyer Jeremy Joseph, who specialises in maritime and aviation law, said the Warsaw Convention stipulates the minimum liability for international carriage of persons, luggage or goods performed by aircraft be US$160,000 per passenger.

He said if the flight operated without permission and had breached standard operating procedures, then families can demand more compensation.

“The Warsaw Convention is a public policy and if it is proven that the airline acted through gross negligence or recklessness, then the families may break the limit for compensation,” he said.

Civil lawyer Alwin Rajasurya said if the flight had operated without permission, the airline’s insurance company may not compensate the families.

He said the airline would be liable if the investigations reveal negligence on its part.

“The victims’ families will still get their compensation, it’s just a matter of who pays out,” he said.

“It would come down to the exact terms of the agreement between the airline and the insurer once investigations are concluded.”

Similarly, he said there would be no reason to hold back on life insurance claims.

“If an insurance company holds back its policy due the purchase of an ‘illegal’ ticket, then the families may claim against the airline.”

SURABAYA — More than a thousand worshippers attended somber Sunday services at an Indonesian church devastated by the crash of AirAsia Flight 8501, praying for relatives of lost loved ones — members of the congregation who made up a quarter of the 162 people aboard the plane.

“God, we pray that you will give the grieving families extraordinary strength and help ease their pain,” said the Rev. Johannes Sonny Susanto of Pentecostal Mawar Sharon Church. “Let them put their trust in you and know that you are a good God.”

Amen was echoed by those in the pews.

9AM: There were 46 members of Mawar Sharon, a Protestant denomination in Indonesia, on board AirAsia QZ8501, reports our correspondent Devianti Faridz. On Sunday, churchgoers prayed for the affected families who face up to the loss of their loved ones.

THE MAWAR SHARON CHURCH, SURABAYA LOST 41 MEMBERS

The tragedy appears to have hit Surabaya’s Christian community particularly hard.

Pastor Philip Mantofa of the Mawar Sharon Church in Surabaya was shocked to discover that 41 of the 162 passengers and crew were members of his church. He said it was it not unusual for many members to travel to Singapore for holidays.

More than 100 people gathered as Mantofa led a service of prayers and songs Wednesday at the Surabaya airport.

“Some things do not make sense to us but God is bigger than all this,” he said.

Counselors from the church hugged and prayed for relatives, including Linca Gonimasela, who lost her 13-year-old son, Adrian Fernando.

It was supposed to be a fun trip to Singapore with his aunt, uncle and their 3-year-old daughter. All four were aboard the plane. Linca couldn’t go on the trip as she had to work.

“He is my only son,” she said. “At first he didn’t want to go but later on he was persuaded to join them for the New Year holidays.”

SURABAYA: Special prayers were held for Christian family members of the Indonesia Air Asia QZ8501 passengers at the Juanda Airport here.

Members of the Mawar Sharon Charismatic church organised the session to help them through the difficult period, an official from the Civil Aviation authority said.

The congregants including the 100-odd next of kin started the prayers with the hymn entitled “Aku Berserah” (I Surrender All) led by a pastor from the church.

As they sang the family members held out their hands and some cried as they sang the hymn with tears.

A church member who coordinated the 15 minute session said some of the family members are also from the same Mawar Sharon congregation.

After the hymn they proceeded with prayers led by the pastor.

Ms Khairunisa has been tentatively identified as one of the seven bodies so far retrieved from the Java Sea after the aircraft crashed on Sunday, 42 minutes after taking off from Surabaya in Indonesia with 162 people on board.

We only borrowed our daughter from God and now he has taken her back,’ Mr Haidar told the SMH.

Her family have been waiting at Juanda Airport near Surabaya in East Java province, where a crisis centre has been providing information to anxious relatives since the plane vanished from radars after departing the airport for Singapore.

‘This is what we expected, and the sooner the body is returned, the sooner we can have her back,’ Mr Haidar said.

Known to her friends as Nisa, her father said she would have put the lives of her passengers before her own.

AirAsia stewardess Khairunisa Haidar Fauzi (pic), who was on board QZ8501, wanted to celebrate the New Year in Surabaya, her father said.

Haidar said that was the last conversation he had with his 22-year-old daughter before she went to work for the last time.

Now the family is hoping her body has been found. They have accepted that she is gone.

Khairunisa’s brother, M. Ikhsan Nul Kamil, told Indonesian news portal Detik.com that if the authorities had found the remains of a stewardess, based on the red AirAsia flight attendant uniform on the body, he hoped it would be his sister’s.

“Kalau yang dimaksud pramugari, kami harap itu adik kami (If they are saying they have found the body of one of the air stewardess, then we hope it is our little sister),” Ikhsan told the news portal at the AirAsia crisis centre in Juanda, Surabaya, today.

The grieving man said the family, including parents, had accepted that Nisa, as Khairunisa was fondly called, was no longer with them.

“We are hanging on, being as strong as we can. We know she is gone,” Ikhsan said.
