Ipoh coffee uncle found, and he’s not Chin Peng

The mural of an elderly man in Ipoh which generated controversy after a local resident claimed it was the image of communist leader Chin Peng turned out to be a dud after all.

Lim Chai, the son of the man featured in the mural, said his family broke into laughter when they first heard about the claim.

“My father looks nothing like Chin Peng, my whole family laughed when we heard about it,” he said in an interview with Kwong Wah Daily published today.

Lim said his 80-year-old father resides in Penang and older Penangites would know him as he was active in ghost festival activities in the 1980s.

He added that his father in his younger days had also operated a coffee shop.

Lim said Zacharevic met his father at his cousin’s coffee shop on Carnarvon Street, Penang, and had taken an interest in the old man.

Ipoh City Council denies mural based on Chin Peng

IPOH: The Ipoh City Council (MBI) has refuted claims that the mural depicting an old man sipping coffee at Jalan Tun Sambathan was based on Communist Party of Malaya secretary-general Chin Peng.

A city council public relations officer said on Tuesday that the mural, painted by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic was instead inspired by a local folk here.

When contacted, MBI corporate principal assistant director Normala Latiff said the face of the old uncle was inspired by a crane operator.

“There is a clip on Youtube that shows the making of these murals in the Old Town.

“Please watch the clip to understand it,” she said.

Ipoh council to repaint mural after ‘Chin Peng’ stir

The Ipoh City Council (MBI) will be repainting a mural depicting an old Chinese man sipping coffee at the centre of the town after the mural was accused of having a resemblance to the late communist leader Chin Peng.

According to a report in Sinar Harian today, MBI would “discuss” with famous mural painter, Ernest Zacherevic, who painted the mural, to “change the picture”.

The report quoted a “source” from MBI as saying so after several complaints were raised about the resemblance of the man painted to Chin Peng.

However, MBI has maintained that the mural does not depict Chin Peng.

In the same report, Perak NGO Front chairperson Mohd Salleh Mohd Khan urged an “investigation” to determine who is the man depicted in the mural painting.

“Even the building owner must be investigated so that everything is made clear,” he said.

State Islamic NGO Pertubuhan Ikram Malaysia (Ikram) chief Yahanis Yahya said that the local council must give an “explanation” about the mural, while urging that all sensitivities be preserved.
