JPJ denies being involved in chase in Malacca which resulted in four deaths

accidyThe four victims involved in the tragic incident died on the spot.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24, 2015:

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has denied a report saying four in a family died  yesterday after the Kancil they were in was rammed by a car being pursued by department officers.

The report stated that the incident happened about 4.15pm in Jasin, Malacca, when a Proton Perdana travelling from Merlimau was chased by a JPJ enforcement vehicle, causing the driver to lose control and ram into the Kancil travelling on the opposite direction.

“The JPJ headquarters have received a full report on the incident from the Malacca branch.

“In fact, four of our officers on patrol duty came across the accident and provided the necessary assistance until the police arrived at the scene,” said a statement posted on JPJ’s Facebook page today.

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) today announced that it will continue its operations to enforce the law which forbids unauthorised strobe lights and HID headlamps and also to issue summonses to owners of vehicles with numberplates which do not conform to regulations.

There was some confusion this week that the JPJ had suspended its operations but the department has clarified in a statement to the media this morning that it will carry out the exercise, which had begun on November 1, as planned.

The important thing for the JPJ to achieve its objective of getting motorists to comply with laws is to show it does not practice double standards and everyone (except royalty perhaps) – regardless of status and title – must obey the laws. In fact, it is disheartening that a good example is not set by many in government who have non-conforming numberplates on their cars. If they show that they do not care about following regulations, how can they expect others to do so?

JPJ aims to half traffic-related deaths by 2020

KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is determined to half the number of traffic-related deaths by 2020 and will continue strict enforcement of traffic laws to ensure road safety, even if it incurs the public’s wrath in doing so. “If we don’t take stern action now, the annual rate of road deaths may increase to 10,716 by 2020. JPJ aims to minimise that projection by about 50% to 5,358 road deaths per year,” said JPJ director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad, adding that it was his duty and he would do so even if it made him unpopular. Ismail acknowledged that some quarters were unhappy with the ongoing crackdown against vehicles with strobe lights, non-regulation number plates and high intensity discharge (HID) lights. He said advocating road safety alone was not enough, as motorists needed to be educated and disciplined into obeying the law and driving safely on the road. Ismail said that penalising errant motorists for minor offences was a way of disciplining and deterring them from committing potentially fatal offences in the future. http://www.thestar.com.my/News/Nation/2014/11/09/JPJ-half-traffic-deaths-2020/Don’t you think that they should begin with their own personnel?

JPJ to review ops on fancy number plates and lights

KEMAMAN: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will re-evaluate the effectiveness of its operation against motorists using vehicles with strobe lights, non-regulation number plates and high intensity discharge (HID) lights. Its director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad said an in-depth review would be carried out to decide whether the operation should be continued or stopped after its one-month period ends on Nov 30.

http://www.thestar.com.my/News/Nation/2014/11/09/JPJ-to-review-ops-on-fancy-number-plates-and-lights/IT IS HIGHLY LIKELY THAT YOUR NUMBER PLATES DON’T MEET THE NEW SPECIFICATIONS. Of the 12 cars parked along the road where I had my number plates changed (for RM33), only 2 had number plates that met the new specifications. Do something about yours. Soon.

Comparison of new at top and old at bottom. Your old plates probably don’t fit the newly released specifications because apparently there were NO specifications before.

zzNOTE THE PROCESS INVOLVED WHEN YOU ARE CAUGHT! It will cost you time, money and much inconvenience. 1. You get a summons. But you can’t pay the fine yet! 2. You also get a PG1 ticket, which requires the vehicle to be brought back to the RTD for inspection within 10 days. You get about 2 months to turn up for the inspection. 3. Only after the inspection is completed satisfactorily. will you be able to pay the fine. 4. If you don’t turn up for the inspection, you will get an uncleared summons which means going to court to face a possible fine of up to RM2,000. 5 What if you don’t show up in court? An arrest warrant will be issued and you will be blacklisted by the RTD. http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/rtd-gets-tough-on-headlights-car-plates?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter — theSundaily

Vehicle owners yet to comply with RTD’s new directive

KUALA LUMPUR: Many vehicle owners in the city have yet to comply with the Road Transport Department (RTD)’s directive of not using strobe, high intensity discharge (HID) headlamps and fancy registration number plates. This was seen when RTD officers who conducted a joint enforcement operation with the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) and police between Oct 1 and Oct 28 issued 624 warning notices. Effective Nov 1, the RTD will issue summonses to vehicle owners caught with these three offences. Kuala Lumpur RTD director, Md Ziki A.Rahman advised all vehicle owners to comply with the law or face the consequences. “For now we only issued warning notices so that vehicle owners can start complying to the directive,” he said, adding those who flout the law can be charged under the Road Transport Act 1987 where they could be fined up to RM2,000 or six months’ jail, or both for first offence or a fine of not exceeding RM4,000 or imprisonment of up to one year, or both, for subsequent offence. http://www.thesundaily.my/news/1213149za
