Malaysians Return to Vote!

HERE THEY COME, BACK TO VOTE!

Many Singapore-registered cars, filled with Malaysian returning to votes, will be on the road on 3rd, 4th and 5th May.

Will the Police, particularly the Traffic Police, hold them up or delay them in some way, to discourage them from returning to vote?

It is said in coffee shops that tens of thousands are returning from Singapore and Johore to their home towns to vote. Bosses in both Singapore and Johore have granted leave. Some bosses have paid for transport.

Those unable to buy bus tickets have gone on the Internet and arranged to carpool. One Opposition political party is said to have arranged for buses, to fetch voters home to Perak.

In whatever way they can, they are returning. TO VOTE.

GE13: Malaysia EC warns Singapore over foreign-registered vehicles

By Apr 19, 2013 8:59AM UTC

A little over two weeks out from polling day in Malaysia and tensions with its neighbour over the causeway have been cranked up with the Malaysian Election Commission (EC) urging the Singapore Government to do more to stop expats returning to vote in foreign vehicles.

In an attempt to address the car pooling being planned in the city state ahead of polling day, authorities said Malaysians coming home to vote on May 5 can only cross in a Malaysian-registered vehicle.

It also urged Singapore’s Foreign Ministry to investigate reports that registered private vehicles were being used to send Malaysian voters home to vote.

Malaysia’s ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition is facing its stiffest challenge in its six decades in government after losing a third of its Parliamentary seats in the last election.

Fears about the issuing of absentee ballots has led to the hundreds of thousands of Malaysian expats in Singapore opting to cross into Malaysia by car, bus and or on foot in order to cast their votes.
……….

According to reports in local newspapers, EC deputy chair Dato Wan Ahmad said: “Singapore authorities should also investigate if Singapore cars are used to help in the Malaysian general election. I believe Singapore Government likewise does not want to see cars from the neighbouring countries involved in its own general election. There should be mutual respect and sensitivity with each other.”
……….

Ahmad said that if passengers are Malaysian and they are travelling in vehicles hired by Malaysians they would be fine, but he advised the Singapore Government to investigate the identity of the car owners or the people hiring the vehicles “to avoid the issue of foreigners interfering in the internal politics”.

The EC also warned voters against waving campaign slogans, which is banned under Malaysia’s election laws. Slogans can’t be used after the end of the campaign period on the eve of polling day.

Vehicles transporting voters can only bear party flags but not campaign slogans or party labels, the EC said.

JOHOR BARU — Barisan Nasional (BN) representatives yesterday handed a memorandum of petition to Singapore’s Consulate-General office in Johor Baru after claiming that they spotted on April 11 two Singapore-registered cars bearing decals asking Malaysians to return home to vote on May 5.

The gesture amounted to election campaigning for Malaysia’s 13th general election, which foreigners are not allowed to carry out, BN Pasir Gudang Information Chief Dahari Hassan and Johor Jaya local councillor Tan Tuan Peng told reporters.

Showing a picture of one of the cars, they said they had lodged a report with the local police about the two vehicles, purportedly driven by Malaysians who are Singapore permanent residents, into Taman Molek last Thursday.

Mr Dahari said he also asked that the Singapore Government warn those driving into Malaysia against such gestures.

The decals did not carry any political party’s logo, but the BN representatives claimed that the opposition Democratic Action Party (DAP) was responsible as DAP members allegedly showed up shortly after the drivers made calls for help on being approached about the decals.

Attempts to reach the DAP for comments were unsuccessful.

PR logos on S’pore-registered cars: MFA replies

Published on Apr 18, 2013

SINGAPORE does not interfere in the domestic politics of other countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, amid reports of Singapore-registered cars driving around Johor bearing logos of the opposition Pakatan Rakyat.

The press statement, issued by its consulate-general in Johor Baru yesterday, comes as some of the 400,000 Malaysians living in Singapore arrange to ferry fellow citizens home to vote in the polls.
……….

Malaysia’s Sin Chew Daily also reported Malaysia’s Election Commission deputy chairman Wan Ahmad Wan Omar as saying that the Singapore authorities should be concerned if Singapore cars were involved in the Malaysian polls.

“It is inappropriate for foreigners to get involved in our election, and as the car is foreign-registered, there is a possibility that the owner is a foreigner,” he told The Straits Times.

He said it was up to Malaysia’s Home Ministry to decide whether to stop such cars. The Sin Chew Daily reported him as saying that Singapore-registered cars whose owners are Malaysians, or which are leased by Malaysians to ferry voters, would be allowed.

April 17, 2013

JOHOR BAHARU, April 17 – “Singapore does not interfere in domestic politics of other countries, just as we expect other countries not to interfere in Singapore’s domestic politics,” says its Consulate-General in Johor Baharu.

In a statement, the Consulate-General said it has received a memorandum regarding a Singapore-registered car in Johor that had logos supporting the campaign of a political party in Malaysia.

The Consulate-General noted that this was an act of an individual whose nationality is unclear. – Bernama
