Ten years ago, two ladies, practising gynaecologist Dr Sharifah Halimah Jaafar and Yip Siew Keen, saw the need to start a service to help women in crisis in Perak. This need resulted in the birth of Perak Women For Women Society (PWW), an apolitical, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, whose objectives are to:

  • offer emotional and social support to women and their children, who suffer from mental, physical and/or sexual abuse,
  • provide temporary refuge services to such women and children,
  • undertake and advocate the eradication of factors that contribute to the inequality and subordination of women through law, policy and institutional reforms, and
  • create awareness and better understanding among individuals, the public and relevant agencies, on issues of violence against women and the underlying inequalities.

Preschool classes for orang asli

PWW SOCIETYSTARTING THEM YOUNG: Mangaleswary with children from Kampung

THE Perak Women for Women Society (PWW) is reaching out to orang asli children living in the interior here with weekly preschool classes.

It kicked off the project with Saturday classes for 50 children from Kampung Orang Asli Pos Woh. Members and volunteers

travelled 80km from Ipoh bringing along whiteboards, marker pens and worksheets, said the society’s presidentelect, P. Mangaleswary.

The teacher-turned-lawyer and social volunteer said the project was to uplift the living standard of the orang asli.

She said education for the young was the best way to integrate them with other communities in future.

“The older children will be given tuition on English,” she said. Mangaleswary said the society planned to increase the number of preschool class days once it had more resources.

Perak Women for Women Society: 2nd Trip to The Pos Woh Orang Asli Village (Saturday, 2 February 2013)

Pre school programme for the OA children
The Perak Women For Women Society (PWW) made their second trip to the Pos Woh Orang Asli village on Saturday, 2/2/2013 to continue with their preschool programme for the Orang Asli children there. The PWW members were joined by volunteers, Prema Sankara Narayana, a lecturer with Kolej Matrikulasi in Gopeng, and her daughter, Praseetha Naidu, a studet at UTAR, Kampar. The children turned up early and were all eager to start. They had a fun play and learn session with games and group activities. As some older children attending primary school had, the previous week, asked for some coaching to prepare for the UPSR, we asked them to come this week. All in, 12 boys and girls aged 10-12 years turned up for the UPSR tuition! As the dropout rate among the Orang Asli children is high after primary school, mainly because they have no access to tuition and hence do not do well in UPSR, the PWW President Dr.Sharifah Halimah Jaafar
has encouraged members and volunteers to also try and provide the older children tuition for their UPSR subjects. We have started this tuition and hope to continue with it together with the Preschool Project. Those who would like to volunteer for the Preschool Project and/or to give tuition to the older children for their UPSR, please contact the PWW secretary, Ms Yip Siew Keen by phone at 05-5469715 or by email : perakwomenforwomen@gmail.comThank you.P.S. A write up in Ipoh Echo of 1-15 Feb 2013
by S SundralingamThe Orang Asli Preschool ProjectRecently Perak Women for Women Society (PWW) embarked on its Orang Asli Preschool Project at the Pos Woh village, Tapah. This preschool project came into fruition to provide these indigenous children who are marginalised and are unable to identify alphabets and numbers, an avenue to cope with formal education. Many of these children miss schooling not because there are no schools
in this area but simply due to factors like poverty, transportation woes and the lack of interest in education. This PWW’s preschool project program aims to help children to master six key learning components: language, communication, cognitive development, morale, spirituality, creativity and social-emotional development. Language skills are given particular emphasis, as it enables children to develop their ability to think, understand concepts, imagine and communicate effectively. The classes also involve activities such as, singing, colouring and fun activities.During registration day, PWW received good response with 53 children from Pos Woh village, and some as young as four years old. PWW intends to run this programme weekly, therefore, for those keen to volunteer or donate in the form of books, stationery,
clothing for the indigenous community, please reach PWW at 05-5469715.

The participants were taught First Aid Theory and later they were trained on how to bandage cuts and wounds, manage fractures and sports injuries. The most challenging part was learning to do CPR on a dummy. It was a very valuable empowerment for the participants who ranged from teenagers, young adults, parents, teachers of daycare and the handicapped, as well as those taking care of the elderly.

THE ORANG ASLI PRESCHOOL PROJECT

The Perak Women for Women Society Orang Asli Preschool Project yesterday, Saturday 26.1.2013.

The Perak Women for Women Society started its Orang Asli Preschool Project yesterday, saturday 26.1.2013.The first team consisted of PWW members, friends and lawyers, including teacher and social activist Sundra Lingam, lawyers Bah Tony and Anthony Law, UKM medical stuudnt Chee Leng, USM fresh graduate Hua Wei, PWW member Sybil and myself. When we arrived at the Pos Woh Orang Asli community hall at 9.20am there were a few Orang Asli chidren helping a elder, En.Chu, to clean the hall. We unloaded all our things and soon word spread of our arrival and more children turned up.We registered all the children and gave them name tags. Some children came with their mothers who brought their chidren’s BCs for them to be registered. At about 10.15am we had registered 53 children! As there was no power supply to the hall, En.Chu pulled a lline from his nearby house and we got our LCD Projector working. The children were thrilled to watch the fun “Play and Learn” videos and joined in the singing and other activities.PWW brought a portable white board to teach the children to write alphabets. Their faces lit up when they were cheered by their friends for coming forward and writing correctly on the whiteboard. Finally, we distributed some stationary, colour pencils and work sheets to the children to do some homework at home.At the end of the session, we treated the children to some nourishing drinks and healthy snacks, including Chinese New year mandarin oranges. It was indeed a rewarding day for us and the Orang Asli children. This success was a great team effort. Special mention goes to the PWW secretary, Ms.Yip Siew Keen who at short notice managed to put together a dedicated team of volunteers.Special mention also goes to the PWW President, Dr.Sharifah Halimah Jafaar who spearheaded this Project. Although she was unable to come along due to work commitments, she was in phone contact with us when we were there, encouraging and motivating us.PWW thanks all the volunteers who helped with this Project and also all those who have put their names down for future sessions. We will be running these sessions every Saturday for now, and we will increase the days once we have more resouces and manpower. All are welcome as volunteers. You may also contribute towards the teaching materials and food for the children. For further details , please contact PWW at 05-546 9715.Thank you.

Back in 2011, the Obedient Wives’ Club made headlines with its statement that it could cure social ills such as prostitution and divorce by teaching women to be submissive and keep their men happy in the bedroom.

‘Obedient Wives’ Club: Malaysia Group Says Good Sex Is A Duty

RAWANG, Malaysia — As a new bride, 22-year-old Ummu Atirah believes she knows the secret to a blissful marriage: obey her husband and ensure he is sexually satisfied.

Ummu and some 800 other Muslim women in Malaysia are members of the “Obedient Wives Club” that is generating controversy in one of the most modern and progressive Muslim-majority nations, where many Muslim Malaysian women hold high posts in the government and corporate world.

The new club, launched Saturday, says it can cure social ills such as prostitution and divorce by teaching women to be submissive and keep their men happy in the bedroom.

“Islam compels us to be obedient to our husband. Whatever he says, I must follow. It is a sin if I don’t obey and make him happy,” said Ummu, who wore a yellow headscarf.

In response, The Perak Women for Women Society gave its views on the Obedient Wives’ Club and women’s rights.

Malaysia: Perspectives on the Obedient Wives’ Club

Source:

IPOH echo

There has been much furore over the formation of the Obedient Wives’ Club by a fringe Islamic group causing heated debate among women and men, alike. Ipoh Echo sought the views of two Malay Muslim women who helm a women’s rights movement here in Ipoh. Dr Sharifah Halimah Jaafar and Puan Halida Mohd Ali are from the Perak Women for Women Society.

Here are their answers to our questions:

IE: Your views on the formation of the Obedient Wives’ Club by Islamic fringe group, Global Ikhwan on Saturday, June 4.

Dr Sharifah Halimah Jaafar, Perak Women for Women

SHARIFAH: Obedient Wives’ Club (OWC) is a farce. It has belittled and insulted women’s role as a wife. Their calling on women to behave like first-class prostitutes in order to keep their husbands satisfied so they will not stray has reduced women’s status to that of a legal prostitute – a sex slave, so to speak. The fact that the statement is being made by a woman is in itself disgusting! We are not a sex object at the beck and call of our husbands. Healthy marriages develop from mutual understanding, love, trust, respect and having similar visions for the family. This club should instead be dubbed, “The Stupid Wives’ Club” or “The Hot Wives’ Club”.

Puan Halida Mohd Ali, Perak Women for Women

HALIDA: The club is an affront to women’s dignity. It sees women as subservient individuals who have no minds of their own. Are the club’s members themselves obedient and exemplary? Are they, being what they are, qualified to counsel us on morality? The club should instead find ways to improve marriage, parenting and empowerment. This is more beneficial.

Incongruous:
These are the only decent toilets available to the Orang Asli but they are built near the main road, in plain sight of all and sundry! Who dares use them?

After talking to the Orang Asli, and in particular to their women folk, PWW is truly inspired to proceed with its plans for the project in this Orang Asli village.
