Ten years ago, two ladies, practising gynaecologist Dr Sharifah Halimah Jaafar and Yip Siew Keen, saw the need to start a service to help women in crisis in Perak.
Ten years ago, two ladies, practising gynaecologist Dr Sharifah Halimah Jaafar and Yip Siew Keen, saw the need to start a service to help women in crisis in Perak. This need resulted in the birth of Perak Women For Women Society (PWW), an apolitical, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, whose objectives are to:
- offer emotional and social support to women and their children, who suffer from mental, physical and/or sexual abuse,
- provide temporary refuge services to such women and children,
- undertake and advocate the eradication of factors that contribute to the inequality and subordination of women through law, policy and institutional reforms, and
- create awareness and better understanding among individuals, the public and relevant agencies, on issues of violence against women and the underlying inequalities.

Preschool classes for orang asli
STARTING THEM YOUNG: Mangaleswary with children from KampungTHE Perak Women for Women Society (PWW) is reaching out to orang asli children living in the interior here with weekly preschool classes.
It kicked off the project with Saturday classes for 50 children from Kampung Orang Asli Pos Woh. Members and volunteers
travelled 80km from Ipoh bringing along whiteboards, marker pens and worksheets, said the society’s presidentelect, P. Mangaleswary.
The teacher-turned-lawyer and social volunteer said the project was to uplift the living standard of the orang asli.
She said education for the young was the best way to integrate them with other communities in future.
“The older children will be given tuition on English,” she said. Mangaleswary said the society planned to increase the number of preschool class days once it had more resources.

by S SundralingamThe Orang Asli Preschool ProjectRecently Perak Women for Women Society (PWW) embarked on its Orang Asli Preschool Project at the Pos Woh village, Tapah. This preschool project came into fruition to provide these indigenous children who are marginalised and are unable to identify alphabets and numbers, an avenue to cope with formal education. Many of these children miss schooling not because there are no schools
in this area but simply due to factors like poverty, transportation woes and the lack of interest in education.This PWW’s preschool project program aims to help children to master six key learning components: language, communication, cognitive development, morale, spirituality, creativity and social-emotional development. Language skills are given particular emphasis, as it enables children to develop their ability to think, understand concepts, imagine and communicate effectively. The classes also involve activities such as, singing, colouring and fun activities.During registration day, PWW received good response with 53 children from Pos Woh village, and some as young as four years old. PWW intends to run this programme weekly, therefore, for those keen to volunteer or donate in the form of books, stationery,

Back in 2011, the Obedient Wives’ Club made headlines with its statement that it could cure social ills such as prostitution and divorce by teaching women to be submissive and keep their men happy in the bedroom.

RAWANG, Malaysia — As a new bride, 22-year-old Ummu Atirah believes she knows the secret to a blissful marriage: obey her husband and ensure he is sexually satisfied.
Ummu and some 800 other Muslim women in Malaysia are members of the “Obedient Wives Club” that is generating controversy in one of the most modern and progressive Muslim-majority nations, where many Muslim Malaysian women hold high posts in the government and corporate world.
The new club, launched Saturday, says it can cure social ills such as prostitution and divorce by teaching women to be submissive and keep their men happy in the bedroom.
“Islam compels us to be obedient to our husband. Whatever he says, I must follow. It is a sin if I don’t obey and make him happy,” said Ummu, who wore a yellow headscarf.

There has been much furore over the formation of the Obedient Wives’ Club by a fringe Islamic group causing heated debate among women and men, alike. Ipoh Echo sought the views of two Malay Muslim women who helm a women’s rights movement here in Ipoh. Dr Sharifah Halimah Jaafar and Puan Halida Mohd Ali are from the Perak Women for Women Society.
Here are their answers to our questions:
IE: Your views on the formation of the Obedient Wives’ Club by Islamic fringe group, Global Ikhwan on Saturday, June 4.
SHARIFAH: Obedient Wives’ Club (OWC) is a farce. It has belittled and insulted women’s role as a wife. Their calling on women to behave like first-class prostitutes in order to keep their husbands satisfied so they will not stray has reduced women’s status to that of a legal prostitute – a sex slave, so to speak. The fact that the statement is being made by a woman is in itself disgusting! We are not a sex object at the beck and call of our husbands. Healthy marriages develop from mutual understanding, love, trust, respect and having similar visions for the family. This club should instead be dubbed, “The Stupid Wives’ Club” or “The Hot Wives’ Club”.
Puan Halida Mohd Ali, Perak Women for WomenHALIDA: The club is an affront to women’s dignity. It sees women as subservient individuals who have no minds of their own. Are the club’s members themselves obedient and exemplary? Are they, being what they are, qualified to counsel us on morality? The club should instead find ways to improve marriage, parenting and empowerment. This is more beneficial.
