Kuala Terengganu snubs Najib: Monster crowd builds up to support Anwar’s Black 505 rally

Written by  Wong Choon Mei, Malaysia Chronicle

KUALA IBAI, KUALA TERENGGANU – It looks like Prime Minister Najib Razak may have a fight with the people on his hands. Despite launching a swoop against Opposition leaders, a civil society activist and a student leader, few Malaysians are impressed at his show of power.

In fact, disdain and contempt seem to be the emotions he and the Umno-BN coalition seem to have evoked with their latest attempt to douse public outrage over purported cheating at Malaysia’s May 5 general elections.

“Many will come,” a Malay man in an elaborate Islamic headgear told Malaysia Chronicle, referring to the Black 505 rallies launched by Opposition chief Anwar Ibrahim two days after the election to protest the electoral fraud.

“What is there to be ‘takut”‘(scared). They are the ones who should be ‘takut’,” a group of young Malay youths dressed in Black 505 t-shirts told Malaysia Chronicle.

“This is democracy,” a man in his 40s, who will be attending the Black 505 rally due to start at 9.00pm, told Malaysia Chronicle when asked if he was worried by news of the multiple arrests.

Blackout 505 organisers told to change venue, date of rally

KUALA TERENGGANU: ‘Blackout 505′ rally organisers would have to postpone the event to May 29 the earliest as they had only notified the district police yesterday, said district police chief Assistant Commissioner Zamri Shamsuddin.
“Under the 2012 Peaceful Assembly (PA) Act, rally organisers are required to inform the police of their event at least 10 days in advance.
“As the letter informing police about the gathering was only received on Sunday, they cannot hold it on Thursday,” he said today.
Zamri added that the location the rally organisers had picked for the event; which is in Kuala Ibai here, was also unsuitable as it is close to the main road and a housing estate.
“The space is too small, and the gathering would cause traffic congestion within the area.
“Therefore, considering the public order and safety, and in accordance with the PA Act, we have asked the rally organisers to change both the location and the date for the rally,” he said, adding that the police will take action if they proceeded with their plan to do it on Thursday at Kuala Ibai, as it will be considered illegal for not complying to the requirements of the PA Act.
Anyone taking part in the illegal rally will also face the law.
