The Opposition’s new mandate — Nurul Izzah Anwar

June 18, 2013

JUNE 18 — Thousands of Malaysians voted abroad during the 13th general election. Many more returned from Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, London and Taiwan, traditionally places with large numbers of Malaysians, to exercise their right to suffrage on May 5th.

This is a peculiar phenomenon.

Why do Malaysians who have found greener pastures abroad feel compelled to return to the country to cast their ballot? This certainly goes against the thesis of Albert O. Hircshman — who argued in a famous treatise in 1970 that when people have the chance to leave, they will, especially if they have found the entity to be increasingly dysfunctional and inefficient.

Malaysia, or rather its government, over the last few decades, has certainly manifested such features.

Concurrently, those who decided to ‘stay back’ would attempt to improve the country by voicing out. Be that as it may, those who have left the country are not expected to express their voices anymore let alone to vote. Yet, vote they did.

The quick and short answer to the above phenomenon is that they care. Indeed, not only do they care about the future of their immediate and extended families still in Malaysia, but they care about Malaysia, period.

And that is where Malaysia draws its greatest pride from — Malaysians and their sense of belonging, of camaraderie.

Beyond caring, they also know, through their collective exposure in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore, if not as far away as United Kingdom, Japan and Australia, that Malaysia has been back-pedaling, especially on issues like corruption and crime let alone in building a vibrant democracy.

‘Sick joke’ to call Izzah a threat, says Wan Azizah

By Zurairi AR
June 02, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 – Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has described those who labelled her daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar a threat as making a “sick joke” today, after the latter was barred from entering Sabah on Thursday.

Sabah chief minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman was reported saying yesterday that those who pose a threat to the Sabah ideals of peace and harmony will not be welcomed.

“It was a laughable matter … It’s a joke. If it’s a joke, it is a sick joke,” PKR president Wan Azizah told The Malaysian Insider during a thanksgiving open house in Lucky Garden, Bangsar here.

“How can you think Izzah is a threat to Sabah? The story is so ridiculous.”

Wan Azizah stressed that Nurul Izzah was only there for the Pesta Kaamatan, and compared the situation to the Sulu invaders in Lahad Datu who were not treated as such.

Nurul: I had no agenda in Sabah

FMT Staff | June 2, 2013

Was it fear of Pakatan Rakyat’s successful rallies in peninsular that compelled a knee-jerk reaction to bar Nurul Izzah Anwar’s visit to Sabah?

KOTA KINABALU: A shocked PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar has denied hatching any plan to hold demonstrations at the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) premises during the Kaamaatan celebrations here.

Nurul Izzah was barred from entering Sabah on May 30.

Chief Minister Musa Aman reportedly said that they had reason to believe that Nurul Izzah’s visit was “not as innocent” as touted by the opposition.

But Nurul had denied outright that she had an agenda for attending the festivities.

“It’s a fabricated and utterly ridiculous allegations. The allegations are meant to tarnish my character and justify the unjustifiable deportation of BN dissenters.

“I deplore the fact that the Sabah Barisan Nasional government is repeating such fabrication without an ounce of responsible fact-finding,” she said.

Salleh supports Nurul Izzah’s entry ban

May 31, 2013

KOTA KINABALU, May 31 — Sabah Umno liaison deputy chief Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak has expressed full support to the decision and authority of the state government in requesting the director of state Immigration Department to ban the entry of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar to Sabah yesterday.

He said the power to restrict persons from entering Sabah was well outlined in Section 66 of the Immigration Act.

“In any event, legal means by way of an appeal is always available for Ms Nurul Izzah to consider. I believe this is not a partisan political decision, but one that seeks to preserve Sabah’s interest and stability.

“Sabah should ban any politicians from outside Sabah, irrespective of political affiliations, who come to our state with intentions to nurture mistrust and hatred amongst our people,” he said in a statement, here today.

Stressing that Sabahans did not wish to subscribe to a political culture of divide and rule as practiced elsewhere, Salleh, who is also State Legislative Assembly Speaker, said Sabah had always been a peaceful and harmonious state and “we take pride in our unity in diversity”.

“We cannot allow the interest of Sabah be compromised by selfish politicians from Peninsular Malaysia pursuing politics of self-glorification,” he said.

The three Bars of Malaysia — Sabah Law Association, Advocates’ Association of Sarawak and Malaysian Bar — deplore the denial of entry of Nurul Izzah Anwar, a Member of Parliament, into Sabah, upon landing in Kota Kinabalu on 30 May 2013, which was during the Pesta Kaamatan celebrations.
By deploying this drastic measure, the Sabah State Government is flouting the guarantee of freedom of movement that is enshrined in Article 9 of the Federal Constitution, which provides that “every citizen has the right to move freely throughout the Federation”.  Although the Sabah State Government has the statutory right to restrict entry, this power must be used sparingly, and only with justifiable cause.
The three Bars of Malaysia call on the Sabah State Government to immediately rescind the entry ban that it has imposed, and to cease and desist from resorting to such action without any justifiable cause.  We urge the Malaysian Government to take concrete measures to safeguard each citizen’s right to travel within his or her own land without hindrance.

Nurul says Anwar, Kit Siang likely on Sabah blacklist

Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar said she believes that PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim and DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang are on the Sabah immigration blacklist.

Nurul Izzah said this was alluded to by immigration officers who had stopped her from entering Sabah at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport last night.

“I suspect so. They (the immigration officers) were very mum when I asked a few questions, but I understand that they were following orders.

“From what little that I got, (I learnt that) Anwar is included, and Lim Kit Siang as well. They said (Lim) was let in on a one-time pass only,” she told reporters today.

KENYATAAN MEDIA 31 MEI 2013 “Penahanan Anti-Demokratik Atas Arahan Ketua Menteri Sabah Diselar”

Penahanan Anti-Demokratik Atas Arahan Ketua Menteri Sabah Diselar

Posted on Friday, 31 May, 2013

KENYATAAN MEDIA
31 MEI 2013
UNTUK SEBARAN SEGERA

PENAHANAN ANTI-DEMOKRATIK ATAS ARAHAN KETUA MENTERI SABAH DISELAR

Nurul Izzah’s ejection from state ‘big mistake’, says Sabah BN MP

By Boo Su-Lyn
May 31, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 — PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar’s deportation from Sabah yesterday is a “disaster” and a “big mistake”, Umno’s Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Moktar Radin said last night.

Penampang MP Darell Leiking from PKR also criticised the barring of the Lembah Pantai lawmaker’s entry into Sabah, saying that it had “hurt our state’s reputation as hosts”.

“I believe this is a big mistake… and it needs to be corrected,” Bung Moktar tweeted on his @MyKinabatangan Twitter handle, tagging Nurul Izzah and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman in his tweet yesterday.

“I don’t understand why Nurul was not allowed to enter Sabah. If it’s true, then this is a mistake and a disaster,” added the Umno supreme council member.

Barred from Sabah: Nurul plans legal action

Priscilla Prasena | May 31, 2013

The PKR vice president is in discussions with her lawyers to haul the Sabah government to court for barring her entry into the state

PETALING JAYA: PKR vice president, Nurul Izzah Anwar, is planning legal action against the Sabah government for barring her for entering the state.

“I’m in consultation with my lawyers on the possible action to be taken against them,” said Nurul, who is also the MP for Lembah Pantai.
…..

It is learnt that the Immigration Department also informed Nurul that the Chief Minister’s department had also instructed them to not only bar her but many more personalities from Peninsula from entering Sabah henceforth.
…..

“Its a sad situation where Sabah is actually politicising security, and vengeance should not be practiced in security,” said Nurul. “Pakatan still welcomes everyone into PR governed states such as Penang and Selangor.”

Leiking, meanwhile condemned the Sabah Immigration Department and those who instructed them to bar her, saying that they should be ashamed of themselves.

“I challenge the Sabah Chief Minister and state’s cabinet to explain to the people of Sabah and Malaysia why this act transpired,” said Leiking.

Nurul must be ‘most wanted Sulu terrorist’
1:39PM May 31, 2013

PAS Youth condemns the prohibition of Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar from entering Sabah, saying the act proves that the state’s leader harbours resentment towards opposition politicians following the 13th general election.

PAS Youth information chief Ridhuan Mohd Nor also questioned why while Sulu gunmen were able to land in Lahad Datu and remain for weeks, while Nurul was disallowed entry into the East Malaysian state and immediately deported.

“Sulu terrorists succeeded in landing in Lahad Datu, remaining there for several weeks until ultimately taking the lives of several of security forces personnel, while Nurul, who was just crowned a legitimate member of parliament, was denied entry into Sabah,” he said in a statement today.

“Nurul is seen as the most sinful individual, and the most cruel criminal to the people of Sabah.

“Maybe she is a most wanted Sulu terrorist, or possesses firearms that can kill the people there. That must be why she is forbidden from setting foot in the state.”

Ridhuan also said the freedom of citizens to travel, to whichever state in the country must be guaranteed, and not limited to certain states only.

He pointed out that Sabah is not a republic or a nation by itself to decide who can or cannot enter.

“As long as the citizen has a valid identity card, posses no criminal record or have no problem with the Malaysian government, what right does Sabah have to stop said citizen from coming to the state?,” he asked.

NURUL FORCIBLY DEPORTED! Why & how is she a terrorist, Musa Aman?

Written by  Darell Leiking

MP Nurul Izzah Anwar was on her way to celebrate Kaamatan with her fellow Malaysians when she was held back by Immigration allegedly under Sabah Chief Minister Department’s instruction before being forcibly deported back to Semenanjung Malaysia.

I condemn this act, more so because Izzah was visiting my state to celebrate Pesta Kaamatan in her personal capacity. It makes it all political with no purpose and hurt our state’s reputation as hosts.

Nurul Izzah arrived at Kota Kinabalu Airport around 645pm via Air Asia on 30th May 2013 and was to return back on the evening of 31st May 2013 to Semenanjung Malaysia.

Immigration Department Sabah informed YB Nurul Izzah that the Chief Minister’s department had decided to bar her and many more personalities from Peninsula Malaysia from entering Sabah henceforth.

Don’t abuse constitutional right

The right of entry is Sabah Government’s constitutional right but it should not be abused, more so since there are evidence (as revealed in the ongoing Royal Commission of Inquiry) that illegal immigrants have entered and not confronted by the same level of scrutiny as the re-elected parliamentarian of Lembah Pantai and my party’s vice-president.

Why is it that Malaysians joining a festive celebration with fellow Malaysians especially the Kadazans from Sabah and in Sabah now a reason for denial of entry?

Nurul Izzah is an elected MP, mother of two, a loving wife and poses no threat to the security of my state. The Sabah Immigration Department and those instructing it to carry this order should be ashamed of themselves.

I challenge the Chief Minister and the State Cabinet to explain to the people of Sabah and Malaysia as a whole why this act transpired.

Nurul Izzah denied entry into Sabah

K Pragalath | May 30, 2013

The deportation order comes from the Sabah CM’s office, she says.

PETALING JAYA: Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar is being deported from Sabah after the Immigration Department barred her from entering the state.

“Sabah immigration is arranging my deportation. I am not allowed to discuss with Darrell Leiking, who’s here waiting for me,” said Nurul who is also PKR vice president via Twitter.

Darrell Leikeng who is representing as Nurul Izzah’s lawyer is also PKR deputy secretary general and Penampang MP.

According to Nurul’s political secretary Fahmi Fadzil, she flew to Sabah on Leikeng’s invitation to celebrate Pesta Kaamatan in Penampang.

“I am being deported on the instructions of Sabah Chief Minister’s Office,” Nurul Izzah said via Twitter.

She also speculated that other Pakatan MPs would also be stopped from entering into Sabah.

Leikeng meanwhile tweeted that Nurul Izzah has been put back in an Air Asia flight back to KL.

“She was denied entry (into Sabah), right to counsel and the Kaamatan celebration,” he said.

Raja Nong Chik lodges police report against Nurul Izzah

KUALA LUMPUR — Lembah Pantai Umno division head Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin today lodged a police report on a statement made by the Lembah Pantai Member of Parliament Nurul Izzah Anwar linking him to the purchase of 4.856 hectares of land in Bukit Kiara.

He said the report was to enable the police to investigate the statement made by Nurul Izzah, who is also Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice-president, one day before polling for the 13th general election.

Raja Nong Chik claimed that the statement had slanderous undertone.

“I leave the matter to the police to investigate. I will consider filing an (election) petition and a suit against her (Nurul Izzah),” he told reporters after lodging the report at the Pantai Police Station at about 3pm today.

THE BARE-FACED attempt to steal Nurul’s victory

THIS WAS WHAT HAPPENED AT KC AND PENNY’S POLLING STATION. THE SEQUENCE WAS LIKE THIS:

(I) KTM ASKED Counting Agent TO LEAVE

(II) Counting Agent refused to leave. wakil calon argued with KTM until KTM relented

(iii) FRU arrive

(iv) Car arrive and stopped by crowds of people. People from Bangsar also rushed over.

Attempt to steal Nurul’s victory

Perhaps the most brazen attempted rigging at this election was the onslaught on Nurul Izzah’s Lembah Pantai seat. Not only was the bribery rampant, but as the count was being finalised in her favour this evening the Election Commission officials came up with an extraordinary request.

They needed everyone to clear the count, so that they could take a ‘rest’!The 15 PKR observers refused to accept the proposal and stayed on. Shortly after a car drew up outside the count stuffed with ballot boxes inside! The Election Commission officials attempted to force this late entry of extra mystery votes into the count!

The car full of ballot boxes is stopped by the crowd.

A human barricade prevented the ballot boxes from being illegally introduced at this late stage, which Federal Reserve Unit officers attempted to disperse. The people refused to leave and the ballot boxes are still the in car and were not were not allowed into the count.

Ballot boxes marked 120 found in EC car boot trying to enter 121 Lembah Pantai polling station. Blocked by public.

Nurul has been officially declared the winner thanks to the actions of the people who refused to allow their rights to be violated.

Nurul Izzah slays second BN giant to keep Lembah Pantai

By Emily Ding
May 06, 2013

Dubbed the “princess of reformation”, Nurul Izzah had always maintained that she needed to win over the large and overwhelmingly Malay working-class. – Picture by Choo Choy May

KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — Despite the odds that had been stacked against her, PKR incumbent Nurul Izzah Anwar succeeded in keeping her Lembah Pantai federal seat against Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Datuk Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin in one of the fiercest fights in today’s general election, winning by a 1,847-vote margin.

The eldest daughter of Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim scooped up 31,008 votes to defeat the caretaker Federal Territories minister who netted 29,161 votes.

Independent candidate Rusli Baba, who had quit Umno to throw his hat in the ring, drew only 167 votes and lost his deposit.
……….

Nurul Izzah’s victory also gives credence to the rumoured existence of a group of voters who, for fear of political repercussions, would have publicly pledged their allegiance to Raja Nong Chik — or indeed, opted to remain silent — but who would have cast their ballots in her favour.

The number of voters in Lembah Pantai shot up from 56,650 in 2008 to 72,533 this year, an increase of almost 16,000 voters.

Malays make up the majority at 55 per cent, while the Chinese and Indians comprise 23 per cent and 20 per cent respectively.

Nong Chik’s personalised leaflet to a phantom
3:19PM May 4, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR A personalised leaflet by Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin’s team has unwittingly revealed the suspicious existence of a Muslim voter registered at the home of a Hindu family.

S Ragunath, 32, told Malaysiakini that his family was shocked after receiving the leaflet yesterday, which was addressed to one Zalena Suhid, 47.

“We have been receiving material from Raja Nong Chik for a while now. My mother and brother received personalised messages.

phantom voter 040513 ragunath“That didn’t surprise us. But imagine how stunned we were when we saw an alien name registered at our address, where we’ve stayed for 32 years,” said Ragunath (right), a flight attendant.

Ragunath said that his family was at a loss over what remedial action they can take for now.

“We are so close to the election. What can the Election Commission (EC) do about this now?” he asked.

For now, Ragunath said that they plan to hand the leaflet over to party agents manning the school where they will be voting.

The personalised leaflet includes the voting stream and serial number, so it will be easy to identify the voter, if she attempts to cast her ballot.

“The authorities have to look at how such a problem could occur,” he said.

Nurul is top woman in media coverage

Priscilla Prasena | May 1, 2013

But a survey finds that the press pays much more attention to male personalities in articles on the general election.

PETALING JAYA:  Nurul Izzah Anwar is the most frequently mentioned woman in media articles on the run-up to the May 5 general election, according to a survey conducted by the Centre of Independent Journalism and the Malaysian branch of Nottingham University.

The survey, part of a media monitoring project called Watching the Watchdog, found that Nurul scored 0.66% in “value of coverage”, a figure that the surveyors said was way below the average score of male personalities.

The survey analysts found that the value of coverage of the average male political figure was nine times higher than that of the average female.

The 13-day survey covered 29 publications and identified 18,821 articles in Malay, English, Chinese and Tamil.

NURUL, ALONE, BATTLES AGAINST THE BN JUGGERNAUT!

Nurul worries over 16k new voters, high-handed tactics

PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar is facing an uphill battle to retain her Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat against caretaker Federal Territories and Well-being Minister Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin, with independent candidate Rusli Baba making it a three-way contest.

A major problem for Nurul Izzah, 32, a mother of two, is the 16,500 new voters in her constituency, of whom she is convinced that 5,000 are phantom voters, for she is not able to access them..

NONEHer concern is genuine, for she defeated Umno Wanita chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil with a margin of just 2,895 votes.

Hence, the number of new voters and the fear of phantom voters can certainly overturn an expected victory – the 2,000 postal voters in Lembah Pantai not included.

Despite being the incumbent, Nurul Izzah is an underdog against the vast, well-oiled machinery of Raja Nong Chik, who has a reputation of being good at servicing the people in his youth days.

Nurul has to work twice as hard, says dad Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR Faced with overwhelming odds in a David vs Goliath fight as she is up against the machinery and resources of a full minister, PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim believes his daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar has a tough battle ahead of her.

NONE“Nurul Izzah (must) work doubly hard considering the forces against her,” Anwar (right) said at a press conference in Petaling Jaya today.

“With huge funds and government machinery, the Dewan Bandaraya (Kuala Lumpur) fully geared to assist the minister who is personally rich.”

Even so, he believes that his eldest daughter is ready to take up the challenge in defending her seat.

“I think she is being realistic, she is working very hard.”

The incumbent Lembah Pantai MP is facing a strong challenge in the form of caretaker Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin.

Nong Chik, who has been lobbying for the seat since before the dissolution of Parliament, has been going on the ground using ministerial resources at his command to solve long outstanding woes of Lembah Pantai folks which dated back decades when BN held the seat.

However, Nurul is no greenhorn when it comes to a tough fight as the “giant-killer” won the seat in 2008 by defeating then-federal minister Shahrizat Abdul Jalil in her maiden electoral appearance.

Nong Chik a pushover for Nurul: Lembah Pantai to become PR stronghold

Written by  Christopher Fernandez, Malaysia Chronicle

Perhaps the best and most highly obvious act of Barisan Nasional’s act of desperation to win the 13th GE is for Raja Nong Chik to go for broke in the constituency of Lembah Pantai against incumbent Nurul Izzah Anwar.

Toppling Nurul, to Nong Chik, must be equivalent to ousting Anwar from the arena of Malaysian politics as Nurul is now touted as to possibly become the nation’s first woman prime minister if everything goes according to form.
……….

While Nong Chik has long prior to the run up to the 13th GE began his moves to take control of Lembah Pantai by ensuring that his arch-rival for the seat, Sharizat Jalil, was pushed out of contention, and has orchestrated government machinery to assert his hold on the constituency, the moves have been carefully watched and monitored by constituents.

But the biggest fault of Nong Chik, admitted to by a growing number of voters in the area, is that unlike Nurul Izzah, who comes across as a person who goes to the ground to walk the talk, Nong Chik’s ploy’s are seen as mischievous and he fails miserably the credibility test.

Exposing the “modus operandi” of Nong Chik

The underhanded manner in which he is using as his ‘modus operandi’ for trying to wrest Lembah Pantai back into the BN-UMNO fold is not being realized by some people in Lembah Pantai as ploys used by Nong Chik is usually sly and cunning.

He is attempting to pull wool over the people’s eyes and hoodwink them that he cares for them and has been busy currying favor especially with the Indian segment of Lembah Pantai as they are currently the fence-sitters who he thinks may tip the balance of votes in his favor.

But if Sharizat is best remembered by Lembah Pantai constituents for her sheer arrogance and insensitivities and the corruption of her household in the National Feedlot Corporation fiasco, Nong Chik also comes across as being equally dubious in nature.

In Lembah Pantai battle, Nurul Izzah gets help from Nik Aziz

KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 — Despite his frail health, popular PAS leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat made a rare appearance here today to shore up support for Lembah Pantai’s PKR incumbent Nurul Izzah Anwar.

The PKR vice-president had roped in the PAS spiritual leader for her uphill battle to keep the federal seat from Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate, Senator Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin in the May 5 general elections.

“The event was supposed to be a short one but the strong support shown by Pakatan Rakyat (PR) supporters…I think shows the importance of Nik Aziz in the elections,” Nurul’s political aide, Fahmi Fadzil told The Malaysian Insider.

The long-serving Kelantan mentri besar was given a hero’s welcome by about 200 locals who had gathered at the location of his ceramah about an hour before he arrived from Putrajaya.

Nik Aziz’s presence in Putrajaya, where he performed Friday prayers and spoke briefly to supporters, drew a large crowd, a testament to his influence among Malaysia’s majority Muslims.

In Lembah Pantai, he received a similar response albeit a smaller crowd as storm clouds had gathered in the sky. But supporters cramped the tiny surau in the Permai Permata flats and jostled each other just to watch him speak in support of the 32-year-old daughter of opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Nik Aziz’s appearance in the federal capital was also significant for the federal opposition pact as a whole because he oversaw the distribution of an open letter by a world-renowned Islamic cleric endorsing Anwar as fit to lead Malaysia if PR wins the May 5 polls.

PKR says 5,000 ‘dubious’ Lembah Pantai voters unverifiable, not squatters

By Emily Ding
April 24, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 — PKR’s campaign criticised today the Election Commission (EC) for not providing complete addresses for the alleged 5,000 “dubious” voters in the federal constituency of Lembah Pantai, but said it was clear from available information that most of these registered voters are not squatters who had moved to government housing, as claimed by Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin.

Fahmi Fadzil, who is incumbent MP Nurrul Izzah Anwar’s political secretary, showed reporters a list of the 5,000 voters PKR had obtained from the Election Commission (EC) and pointed out streets and apartment names that were not squatter areas, such as Jalan Bangsar and Apartment Putra Ria opposite the Mid Valley shopping mall.

“The efforts of Umno members in Lembah Pantai accusing Nurul Izzah of trying to strike voters off the electoral roll because they live in squatter areas is not true,” he said at PKR’s Lembah Pantai operations centre today.

“There are a lot of streets and places in Bangsar, for example. It is impossible that these places are squatter areas.”

Lawyer Edmund Bon, who was also present at the news conference, said that the EC must have a voter’s complete address to register him or her on the electoral roll.

50/50 In Lembah Pantai

Free Malaysia Today

It’s touch and go in Lembah Pantai

Alyaa Azhar | April 24, 2013

Both candidates have a 50% chance of winning, say constituents.

KUALA LUMPUR: The people in Lembah Pantai are divided over who they want as MP. Although some are all for incumbent PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar to remain as the MP for Lembah Pantai, a considerable number of others want Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin, instead, to win the parliamentary seat.
……….

Mohamad Azlishah, 30, who helps out at his brother’s bicycle shop, however, expressed hope for the incumbent MP to remain as the Lembah Pantai MP.

“I hope she will remain as MP here as she has done so much for the constituency. The things she have done are more personal in nature; they are more on the rakyat’s wellbeing.

“Nurul Izzah always makes surprise visits and does not use the media whenever she does this. Her works are void of publicity.

“If you are really sincere, you do not need to do something and let others know about it,” said Azlishah who has been living in Lembah Pantai since he was born.

“I say this based on what I have observed, even though my mother used to be a Wanita Umno member.

“Recently, there was a fire at a workshop near here. Although she did not dress well at the time, that was secondary because the most important thing was that she came at 3am to help,” he said.
……….

Meanwhile, Ahmad Padil Abdullah, 56, said there is a 70% chance in favour of Raja Nong Chik winning the constituency.

“He has done so much for the constituency, especially in terms of giving loans.

“The only strength of the opposition is its ceramah. It has a lot of ceramah and many will come. The BN side also has many people joining but it lacks credible speakers,” said Padil, who is the vice- chairman for the Pantai Dalam Petty Trader’s Association.
……….

Lembah Pantai has 72,533 voters, of whom Malays make 55.3%, Chinese 22.8%, Indians 20% and others the rest.

It will see a three-cornered fight involving incument Nurul Izzah, Raja Nong Chik and Independent Rusli Baba.

None of the locals that FMT spoke to gave any chance to Rusli.

Nurul Izzah, Nong Chik vie for Lembah Pantai’s poor

By Emily Ding
April 21, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, April 21 — The heat is on for the 13th general elections, especially in the political battleground of Lembah Pantai, as PKR’s Nurul Izzah Anwar and Umno’s Datuk Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin jockeyed for the hearts and minds of voters in a low-cost housing area in Pantai Dalam yesterday.

At a walkabout around the Kampung Kerinchi pasar malam, the incumbent Lembah Pantai MP and the Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister took turns greeting shoppers and stall owners, entourage in tow, without crossing paths.
……..

PKR’s Nurul Izzah Anwar posing for pictures with market-goers.
……….

As Nong Chik acknowledges that the voters he needs to woo are the middle- and upper-middle-class Bangsarians, so Nurul Izzah admits she needs to win over voters in low-income areas.

“Yes, he’s strong here because he’s created this ecosystem of those subservient to financial renumeration, but does it mean that everyone will fall for it? No,” she said, referring to the Barisan Nasional (BN) government’s People’s 1 Malaysia Aid (BR1M) annual handouts for low-income families.

“Certainly, in their plight right now, the short-term solution is of course provided by Umno… But there has been no meaningful change in the increase of wages in the last 10 years, and they have failed to improve people’s opportunities to get a better life,” she told The Malaysian Insider.
……….

Several Lembah Pantai voters who The Malaysian Insider spoke to at the market seemed to indicate that it would be a close fight between the two candidates.

Caught in a sex video smear campaign, she says politics has taken a toll on her husband and her father

NURUL IZZAH: Emotional when talking about her husband’s feelings and her father’s experience

DIRTY politics have been emerging in the political scene lately and women leaders are being targeted as well.

PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah, fondly known as the “Princess of Reformation”, has became one of the victims.

She asserted she would resist them, but broke down when her husband was mentioned, claiming an injustice was done to them.

In an interview with Oriental Daily, Nurul Izzah admitted the smear campaign of late had been affecting her despite being mentally prepared before entering politics.
……….

However, she became emotional when talking about her husband’s feelings and her father’s experience, saying their support was her important backup force when facing slanders.

She also spoke about the past when her future parents-in-law visited Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in prison to discuss her marriage; her mother-in-law had reminded her several times to reconsider getting involved in politics.

She admitted she was not expecting a political sex attack against her, especially after her father had been put on trial for sodomy twice.

“You know he has six children and we are very close,” she said.

“I feel sad for my husband… for him… because it’s me. I am contesting. But he, you know, as a husband, I’m sure he feels. It’s a lot lah kan? I really don’t want to cry, but…”

Married for 10 years and a mother-of-two, Nurul Izzah said she had “warned” her then future husband to consider thoroughly when he proposed to her.

Nurul Izzah said when her husband consoled her, she understood his feeling of anger and resentment, and desire to protect her.

That was why she had to continuously assure her husband she can take on the challenges that comes her way.

“Of course, we are strong, but, as a woman, it’s a different thing because I feel like I am a young woman and I have kids, and I have to face the world and it’s a lot of things to take.”

She expressed her wish for voters to reject any kind of dirty political tactics because they not only destroy the lives of people, but also tarnish their reputation.

To her, that is worse than murder. Asked if she was worried about voters’ perception after a sex video that implicated her was leaked, Nurul Izzah said she was not.

15 key seats to watch in GE13

Nurul Izzah Anwar (PKR, incumbent) vs Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin (Umno)

a

A class war of sorts is taking place in Lembah Pantai between Nurul Izzah Anwar, who is well liked by the middle-class constituents for her articulate nature, and Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin, who has channeled most of his effort and Federal Territories Ministry funds towards the working class constituents.

Nurul Izzah is in a precarious position because she won in 2008 with a majority of only 2,895 votes (7 percent of total votes cast). Will her charm and intellect alone be enough to withstand the onslaught of BN’s money and machinery?

PKR Indian leader threatened over Nurul Izzah’s sex tape allegation

PREDEEP NAMBIAR
BUKIT MERTAJAM: A Permatang Pauh Indian community leader lodged a report over a threatening phone call believed to be over the remarks he had made in Utusan Malaysia over the alleged Lembah Pantai member of parliament Nurul Izzah Anwar’s sex tape, among others.

PKR Permatang Pauh Indian community leader N. Ponnusamy, 43, lodged a report at the Central Seberang Prai police district headquarters after receiving a threatening phone call on Thursday and his car was scribbled with a marker pen the next day.

On Thursday, Ponnusamy had commented on Malay daily Utusan Malaysia claiming that PKR vice-president Azmin Ali was attempting to stop the power of party leadership by Nurul Izzah and PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

He had also alleged that the sex tape featuring Nurul Izzah was masterminded by Azmin’s supporters camp.

Sex video a malicious slander, says Nurul

G Vinod | April 1, 2013

The PKR vice president alleges that the lies against her were spread by Umno supporters and tells them to stop the attacks.

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR vice president Nurul Izzah Anwar said the sex video purportedly implicating her was a malicious slander by pro-Umno individuals.

a

“I was shocked when I heard about it. Enough of all these slanders,” she said.

Last week, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Abdullah alleged that he was approached by individuals who claimed they were in possession of sex videos implicating senior party leaders.

The leaders implicated in the video by the anonymous individuals were PKR supremo Anwar Ibrahim, Nurul and Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

Nurul, who is also a Lembah Pantai MP, said that the individuals were attempting to tarnish her family’s image using the video.

“They are also attempting to tarnish the image of PKR leadership. I say 15 years of slander is enough. Not only does it affect the party but also the society,” she said.

This is shocking, I did not expect to be a victim – Nurul slams sex video conspirators

Written by  Wong Choon Mei, Malaysia Chronicle

Malaysia’s fastest-rising woman politician Nurul Izzah slammed her political enemies for bringing out the “sex” weapon against her as the country hurtled towards the 13th general election.

“Not just against women, it is not a good thing to do against anyone. I think what Saifuddin mentioned yesterday is very clear. So there is nothing more that needs to be said except that we deplore and we reject such gutter politicking,” Nurul told Malaysia Chronicle at the sidelines of a press conference on Wednesday.

“And Malaysians I am sure will not be taken in and reject such politics. This is shocking and I guess when I joined politics, I did not expect to be a victim but certainly we do what we can. We remain in the fight because we remain on the side of the truth.”

Don’t allow M’sian women to be abused and intimidated

Some women groups and activists have begun to react with anger at the news that agents of Prime Minister Najib Razak’s Umno-BN coalition had threatened to release a video they alleged contained explicit footage of Nurul.

They are demanding tough action from the prime minister, who also happens to be the Women’s Minister. So far, there has only been deafening silence from him and the ministry.

“Obviously, this is politically related because of the timing which is too close to the general election to be ignored. But something urgent and strong must be done to protect women because we are very vulnerable to these sort of slander,” Tan Poh Lai, the deputy Women’s chief of PKR Johor, told Malaysia Chronicle.

PKR: Nurul Izzah, Khalid to be implicated in sex videos

Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar and Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim are among PKR leaders who stand to be implicated in new sex videos that may be released by Umno agents in the future, claims PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution.

NONESaifuddin claimed that he had been shown “teasers” of the separate videos featuring opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and his daughter Nurul Izzah (right) in Kuala Lumpur “two or three days ago”.

He said that Umno agents used the sex videos as a warning to him, but Saifuddin said PKR is unfazed by the threats, as such things have become “bread and butter” issues for the party over the last 14 years.

“We have been dealing with it for the past 14 years. We are used to it,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said sources have informed him that a sex video on Khalid is also being “manufactured”.

“They (the agents) told us that many other videos implicating PKR leaders are in productions there,” he claimed.

“We ask them (Umno) to debate, they refuse. We ask them to put up manifestos, they are busy releasing videos,” he said, lamenting on the political culture of targeting the integrity of opposition leaders.

Videos are of a ‘sexual nature’

Saifuddin described the videos he had seen as “sexual in nature”, but did not disclose the demands that the “Umno agents” had made while threatening to release the videos.

“It’s carrot and sticks,” Saifuddin merely said when asked about the nature of the demands made by the supposed agents.

“These videos are the result of digital manipulation involving the coupling of separate scenes to provide the impression that our leaders are participating in sexual misconduct,” he stressed.

Saifuddin added that several other PKR leaders were also with him when they were shown the “teasers” aboard a travelling car in Kuala Lumpur.
