Najib’s denial is a lie

K Pragalath | February 16, 2013

PKR vice-president N Surendran and activist Latheefa Koya maintain their claim that the prime minister did stop Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand from coming here.

PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president N Surendran and activist Latheefa Koya have reiterated that letters between the Thai Justice Ministry and renowned pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand proves that Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak lied when he told the media that the Malaysian government did not stop Pornthip from conducting a post-mortem here.
……….

“Najib’s denial is further contradicted by the existence of a letter from the Thai Ministry of Justice to Pornthip stating in effect that the Malaysian government was against her conducting the second autopsy. That letter was dated Feb 14 and was a follow-up to communications on this subject between the Malaysian and the Thai governments.

Surendran and Latheefa urged Najib to “immediately lift all diplomatic and administrative obstacles against the pathologist”.

Dr Pornthip is well known in Thailand for clashing with the authorities, especially for alleging police killings during then-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s anti-drug campaign in 2003.

Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunand, also spelled Porntip Rojanasunan, M.D. (Thai: พรทิพย์ โรจนสุนันท์; RTGS: Phonthip Rotchanasunan, born: 21 December 1955) is a Thai forensic pathologist, author, human rights activist, and cancer survivor.

A media personality and the most famous pathologist in Thailand, Pornthip often appears on television sporting her unorthodox style: punk-rock hair dyed purplish red, eccentric clothing, and glittery eye makeup, and platform shoes. The Thai English-language newspaper The Nation chose Pornthip, along with Chote Wattanachet and brothel-tycoon Chuwit Kamolvisit as persons of the year for 2003. She was awarded the Chulchomklao (fourth degree) decoration and the honorific “Khunying” in 2003.

WHO’S TELLING FAIRY TALES? Are you saying Dr Pornthip lied but not you – lawyers slam Najib

Written by  Maria Begum, Malaysia Chronicle

Lawyers for the Sugumar family expressed outrage at Prime Minister Najib Razak’s “bare denial”, warning that they had documents to show he had personally intervened and blocked her from carrying out a second autopsy of the security guard who had died under mysterious circumstances while in police custody.

“We stand by our statement. Dr Pornthip has already told the media that the Malaysian government blocked her by saying to the Thai government that they are not happy with her. Is Najib denying this?” N Surendran, one of the key lawyers, representing the family of C Sugumar told Malaysia Chronicle.

“We have seen the documents confirming this. Clearly, the Malaysian government is deliberately stopping Pornthip. It is a cruel and unjust act to prevent Sugumar’s family from getting justice.”

National news agency Bernama had reported Najib as dismissing Surendran’s claim that the Malaysian leader had “communicated” with his Thai counterpart Yingluck Shinawat and as a result the Thai government had decided to bar Pornthip in order not to “undermine the relationship between the two countries”. “It is not true…these are all fairy tales. Don’t listen to it. Not at all,” Najib told reporters on Friday.

‘Sugumar’s death being used for political mileage’

G Vinod | February 15, 2013

PKR vice-president N Surendran has been accused of using the post-mortem on Sugumar’s death to stay in the limelight.

PETALING JAYA: MIC today urged PKR vice- president N Surendran to stop using security guard C Sugumar’s death as a tool to gain political mileage.

“Sugumar’s family is already devastated by his death and is enduring a lot of hardship,” said MIC Youth secretary, C Sivaraajh.

Yesterday, Surendran accused Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak of preventing Thai pathologist, Pornthip Rojanasunan from conducting a second post-mortem on Sugumar’s remains.
…………

Sivaraajh, however, described the PKR leader’s accusation against Najib as illogical.

However, there appeared to be no report of any Malaysian government official contacting the Thai authorities over the matter, nor were there instructions detailing Pornthip not to participate in the procedure as alleged by PKR yesterday.

The Thai Ministry of Justice is concerned that the involvement of forensic pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunan in the second autopsy of an alleged police brutality victim may incur the displeasure of the Malaysian government.

This is detailed in an internal report sighted by Malaysiakini, in which the ministry’s concern about the matter relating to the death of security guard C Sugumar last month is expressed.
………..

The report, which appears to be an official Ministry of Justice document, is in Thai.
………..

“Previously, the Malaysian government was not pleased by Dr Khunying Pornthip’s role (when she) was invited to conduct an autopsy of Teoh Beng Hock (left), an aide of a DAP politician who died in Selangor in 2009. It was seen (by the Malaysian government) as affecting the government’s image negatively,” the document stated.

‘It’s all fairy tales,’ says Najib on bid to bar Pornthip

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today refuted an allegation by the opposition that he had prevented Thai forensic expert Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand from conducting a second post-mortem on a security guard, C Sugumar, who was allegedly beaten to death by the police.

“It is not true… these are all fairy tales. Don’t listen to it. Not at all,” Najib told reporters after opening the Perak Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) in Ipoh today.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 15 — Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand has said she declined to perform a second autopsy on security guard C. Sugumar as the Malaysian government was not happy with her previous work in the death of DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock.

Sugumar’s family lawyer N. Surendran said last Tuesday that the Thai forensic pathologist made the sudden about-turn after he announced that she was due to arrive next Wednesday for the post-mortem on Sugumar, who allegedly died from police brutality last month.

Dr Pornthip told The Malaysian Insider via email yesterday that the deputy to the permanent secretary of Thailand’s Ministry of Justice (MOJ) had informed her of a message from the Malaysian government that it was “not happy with my work, especially in (the) case of TBH (Teoh Beng Hock).”

‘Najib pressured Thai PM to stop Pornthip’

PKR is claiming that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had a hand in preventing Thai forensic expert Dr Pornthip Rojanasunan from performing the second autopsy on alleged police brutality victim C Sugumar.

“Najib had communicated with the Thai PM (Yingluck Shinawatra) regarding the second autopsy on Sugumar,” alleged party vice-president N Surendran at a press conference in Petaling Jaya today.

“As a result of the communication, the Thai government decided that Pornthip should not perform the autopsy in order not to undermine the relationship between the two countries.

“We have been given these facts by an impeccable source and we have complete confidence in the veracity of the information,” he claimed.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 12 — In a sudden turn of events, Thai pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand today declined the invitation by PKR lawyers to perform a second autopsy on C. Sugumaran, the security guard who recently died allegedly due to police brutality.

According to lawyer N. Surendran, the famed director of Thailand’s Central Institute of Forensic Science emailed him earlier today to say that she was “unable to do the autopsy for personal reasons”.

Dr Pornthip’s sudden about-turn came just shortly after PKR lawyers emailed a press statement to media organisations here, saying the Serdang Hospital has finally agreed to the autopsy and Dr Pornthip’s team is due to arrive in Malaysia on February 20.

HARD-WON VICTORY: Liow, Najib cave in after family’s sit-in protest for Pornthip autopsy

Written by  Wong Choon Mei, Alaa Soleiman, Malaysia Chronicle

UPDATE3 Family members of security guard C Sugumar, who died in mysterious circumstances, expressed disappointment in Prime Minister Najib Razak and Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai for failing to keep their promises to look into the death of their son.

Represented by their lawyers and championed by members of Parti Keadilan Rakyat, the family had gone to the Health Ministry in Putrajaya to seek Liow’s permission to bring in renowned Thai pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunan to conduct a second and independent autopsy into the 40-year-old’s death.

But they were snubbed by Health Ministry officials, who refused to meet them, sending only an officer from the communications department to tell them to go home.
……………
At about 6.00, or nearly 2 hours after agreeing to allow Dr Pornthip to do the autopsy, the Ministry finally released the confirmation letter to the family. The move marks a major victory for crusaders against custodial deaths which have risen alarmingly over the past decades.

Health Ministry gives nod to bring in Pornthip

The Health Ministry has agreed to issue the necessary papers to allow renowned Thai pathologist Dr Pornthip Rajanasunand to conduct a second autopsy on C Sugumar, who was allegedly beaten to death by police and a mob on January 23.

Lawyers for Sugumar’s family said that the assurance was given by the ministry’s deputy chief secretary Dr Mohd Azhar Yahaya and medical development director Dr Azmi Shapie during a meeting in Putrajaya today.

Lawyer Latheefa Koya said the duo also agreed to have the ministry supply the necessary facilities for Pornthip to conduct the procedure at the Serdang Hospital.

After waiting for two hours, the family members were provided the authorisation letter which stated that Pornthip must apply to the Malaysian Medical Council for permission to conduct the autopsy.

Deja-vu Pornthip, Najib: Thailand’s most trusted woman vs Malaysia’s least trusted man?

Written by  Wong Choon Mei, Malaysia Chronicle

It looks like a fed-up Malaysian Indian community is digging in this time. No longer are they appeased by the empty promises of political personalities and parties, not even those that come from the lips of the country’s most powerful and wealthy.

It is now a case of ‘put your money where your mouth is’ and embattled Prime Minister Najib Razak, whose call to the Indians for ‘nambikei‘ or trust is now on the line following the shocking death of security guard C Sugumar, who according to at least 3 eye-witnesses was cruelly beaten to death in daylight by a mob led by cops.

Sugumar’s parents have decided to appoint renowned Thai pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunan to take up the cudgels for their dead son, whom they believe was murdered and the Malaysian police now trying to hush-up the case by claiming he had died of a heart attack. Pornthip has already indicated her willingness to do so.

Dr Pornthip ready to do Sugumaran’s second autopsy, say lawyers

By Boo Su-Lyn
February 04, 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 4 — Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand has agreed to perform a second autopsy on security guard C. Sugumaran who allegedly died from a police beating, Sugumaran’s family lawyers said today.

Dr Pornthip is the Thai forensic pathologist who had observed Teoh Beng Hock’s second post-mortem and testified at a royal inquiry that foul play was likely involved in the DAP aide’s mysterious death at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s Selangor headquarters in 2009.
“On behalf of the family, we have urgently written to the prime minister, health minister and the director-general of the Health Ministry to issue the necessary authorisations for Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand to conduct the second post-mortem on Sugumaran’s remains,” said Sugumaran’s family lawyers N. Surendran and Latheefa Koya in a joint press statement.

“We have no objection to a government pathologist being allowed to observe the procedure. We call upon Prime Minister (Datuk Seri) Najib Razak and the other relevant authorities to respond immediately to this request, as the family are unable to carry out the last rites until the second post-mortem is concluded,” they added.
