Hands-on learning: First-year medical students performing blood pressure tests on orang asli villagers during the health screening programme at Kampung Kenang Baru, Jalong.

A GROUP of 48 students from Quest International University Perak (QIUP) got valuable hands-on experience while giving free health screenings at a Sungai Siput orang asli village recently.

The first-year medical students were accompanied by lecturers and support staff from QIUP as they performed the checks at Kampung Kenang Baru, Jalong recently.

Among the available tests were height and weight measurement, waist and hip circumference measurement, body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure tests.

Student Chan Chit Chyn said he was grateful for the opportunity to help the community.

“Performing physical checkup was the first opportunity to incorporate my medical skills into my volunteerism.

“The experience definitely ranks as one of my most rewarding volunteer activities,” he said.

Student Nur Shafinaz Mohamed Naheed said the experience made her proud to be in the medical field.

“I was given the opportunity to help those who generally cannot get all the help they need,” she said.

Student Rakesh Rampal said the experience was more than a physical check-up to him as he got to know the community and he hoped to have made a difference.

“The opportunity to mingle with the community and talk to them has given me greater understanding of what being a doctor entails,” he said.

Faculty of Medicine Community Medicine Department senior lecturer Dr Kay Khine Nyo said the programme was a win-win situation for everyone involved.
…..

Faculty of Medicine dean Prof Dr Alam Sher Malik said most medical curricular lacked the aspect of teaching students soft skills and how to be compassionate.

“To be a good doctor, one must understand first and foremost how to interact with people.

“It is with that in mind that we developed programmes such as community visits to inculcate values like compassion and charity into the students from the first year itself,” he said
